Job description

As the Chief Steward, you will play a pivotal role in ensuring guests have an exceptional and memorable experience throughout their river cruise journey. Your primary responsibilities include overseeing all aspects of guest services, accommodation, dining, and general hospitality, as well as planning and coordinating onboard entertainment and activities. Your attention to detail, customer service, and leadership will contribute to a welcoming and enjoyable atmosphere on board. You will lead a team of stewards and collaborate with other departments to maintain high standards of service, cleanliness, and guest satisfaction

Key responsibilities & duties

  1. Guest Accommodation Management:
    • Oversee the preparation and maintenance of guest cabins, ensuring they are clean, comfortable, and well-equipped.
    • Coordinate with the housekeeping team to address any guest concerns or special requests related to accommodations.
  2. Dining Services:
    • Supervise the dining room staff and coordinate with the culinary team to provide seamless and enjoyable dining experiences for guests.
    • Ensure guests receive excellent service during meals, including addressing dietary restrictions and preferences.
  3. Guest Interaction and Service:
    • Act as a primary point of contact for guests, assisting with inquiries and providing information about the cruise and its services.
    • Handle guest concerns and complaints promptly and professionally, striving to resolve issues to guests’ satisfaction.
  4. Team Leadership and Management:
    • Lead and manage the team of stewards, providing training, support, and guidance to ensure high-quality service.
    • Schedule shifts and allocate responsibilities to maintain efficient operations and balanced workloads.
  5. Inventory and Supply Management:
    • Manage the inventory of guest supplies and amenities, ensuring adequate stock levels for smooth operations.
    • Monitor usage and costs to maintain budgets and minimize waste.
  6. Health and Safety Compliance:
    • Ensure strict adherence to health and safety regulations, including food safety standards and sanitation practices.
    • Conduct regular inspections and training to maintain compliance with relevant guidelines.
  7. Collaboration with Other Departments:
    • Work closely with the culinary, maintenance, and guest services teams to align efforts and provide a cohesive guest experience.
    • Communicate effectively with other department heads to coordinate schedules and resources.
  8. Event and Activity Planning:
    • Plan and coordinate a schedule of onboard entertainment, events, and activities to cater to a diverse range of guest preferences.
    • Collaborate with other departments, including the culinary team, to ensure seamless execution of events.
  9. Excursion Coordination:
    • Plan and coordinate shore excursions, working with local guides and vendors to offer guests unique and enjoyable experiences.
    • Ensure excursions are executed safely and efficiently, and address any issues that may arise.
  10. Customer Feedback and Improvement:
    • Gather feedback from guests to identify areas for improvement and implement changes to enhance guest satisfaction.
    • Stay informed of industry trends and best practices to maintain high standards of service.

 

Academic or trade qualifications

Educational Background: A degree or diploma in hospitality management, tourism, event planning, or a related field is preferred. Equivalent practical experience in these areas will also be considered.

Experience in Hospitality or Cruise Industry: Previous experience in hospitality, tourism, or the cruise industry is essential. Prior experience in a leadership role, such as managing guest services, entertainment, or hospitality, is beneficial.

Customer Service Skills: Proven track record of providing excellent customer service, particularly in a high-end or luxury environment.

Event Planning and Coordination: Experience in planning, organizing, and executing events and activities, either in a hospitality setting or other related fields.

Team Leadership and Management: Ability to lead and manage a team effectively, providing support, training, and guidance to ensure high-quality service.

Communication and Interpersonal Skills: Exceptional verbal and written communication skills for engaging with guests, providing information, and leading events. Being multilingual is an asset.

Health and Safety Knowledge: Familiarity with health and safety regulations, including food safety standards and sanitation practices, to maintain a safe environment for guests and crew.

Adaptability: Ability to work in a dynamic and fast-paced environment, adjusting to changing guest preferences and cruise itineraries.

Budget and Resource Management: Experience managing budgets and resources for guest services and events, ensuring cost-effective use of resources.

Problem-Solving Skills: Strong problem-solving abilities and the capacity to make quick decisions in a high-pressure environment.
