Job description

As Engineer, you will be responsible for the operation, maintenance, and repair of the vessel’s steam-driven propulsion system and related machinery. Your expertise in steam technology and marine engineering will play a critical role in ensuring the safe and efficient operation of the river cruise boat, providing passengers with a memorable and enjoyable journey.

Key responsibilities & duties

  1. Steam Propulsion System Management:
    • Operate and monitor the steam propulsion system to ensure the efficient and reliable movement of the river cruise boat.
    • Regulate steam pressure, temperature, and other variables to optimize performance and fuel efficiency.
  2. Machinery Maintenance and Repairs:
    • Conduct regular maintenance inspections and perform routine repairs on the steam engine, boilers, pumps, and auxiliary machinery.
    • Diagnose and troubleshoot equipment issues promptly to minimize downtime and disruptions during the cruise.
  3. Safety and Compliance:
    • Adhere to strict safety procedures and protocols to ensure the safe operation of the steam-driven systems.
    • Comply with all relevant maritime regulations and environmental standards.
  4. Inventory and Spare Parts Management:
    • Monitor and maintain an inventory of essential spare parts, tools, and equipment required for steam system maintenance and repairs.
    • Coordinate with the Engineering Manager to ensure timely procurement of necessary supplies.
  5. Team Collaboration:
    • Work closely with other engineering staff and crew members to ensure effective communication and coordination during maintenance activities and emergencies.
    • Collaborate with the Captain and other departments to maintain smooth cruise operations.
  6. Recordkeeping and Documentation:
    • Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of maintenance activities, equipment performance, and fuel consumption.
    • Prepare engineering reports and documentation as required by regulatory authorities.
  7. Training and Development:
    • Stay informed about advancements in steam technology and maritime engineering practices through continuous learning and professional development.
    • Provide training and guidance to junior engineering staff as needed.

 

Academic or trade qualifications

Working as a Steam Engineer for a steam-driven commercial passenger river cruise boat requires specialized knowledge in steam technology and marine engineering. It involves maintaining and operating complex machinery while ensuring the safety and comfort of passengers on board.

Marine Engineering Qualification:

    • Marine Engine Driver 3 or higher endorsed for steam granted by AMSA
    • Or Exemption 37
    • Or Boiler Attendant
    • Whilst not mandatory, a relevant engineering degree or diploma, with a focus on marine engineering, steam technology, or a related field would be desirable.
  • Marine Engineering Qualification: A relevant engineering degree or diploma, with a focus on marine engineering, steam technology, or a related field is essential.
  • Steam Engineering Experience: Significant experience working with steam-driven propulsion systems, steam engines, and related machinery on commercial vessels, preferably on river cruise boats.
  • Technical Expertise: In-depth knowledge of steam technology, steam boilers, turbines, and auxiliary equipment used in marine applications.
  • Safety Awareness: Strong understanding of safety protocols and procedures in steam-driven systems and marine engineering environments.
  • Problem-Solving Skills: Excellent troubleshooting and problem-solving abilities to address technical issues and find effective solutions.
  • Adaptability: The ability to work in a dynamic and ever-changing environment, adjusting to the demands of river cruising schedules and technical challenges.
  • Team Player: A collaborative and communicative approach to working with other crew members and departments to ensure seamless operations.
  • Physical Stamina: The role may involve physically demanding tasks, so good physical fitness is necessary.
  • Multilingual Abilities: Proficiency in multiple languages (if applicable to the cruise destinations) is advantageous for communication with international crew and guests.
