As the Captain, you will be responsible for the safe and efficient operation of the vessel. Your expertise in navigation, leadership, and maritime regulations will ensure the smooth sailing of the river cruise, providing an enjoyable and secure experience for all passengers and crew on board. You will work closely with the Engineer and Chef to maintain high safety standards, adhere to schedules, and deliver exceptional guest services.

Key responsibilities & duties

  1. Vessel Operation and Navigation:
    • Assume overall responsibility for the safe navigation and operation of the river cruise boat.
    • Supervise and coordinate with the navigation team to ensure precise route planning and adherence to schedules.
    • Make informed decisions related to weather conditions, waterway regulations, and other factors affecting the vessel’s course.
  2. Crew Leadership and Management:
    • Lead and manage the crew, including navigation officers, deckhands, and other personnel, promoting a culture of safety, professionalism, and teamwork.
    • Conduct regular crew training and drills to ensure preparedness for emergency situations and adherence to safety protocols.
  3. Safety and Emergency Procedures:
    • Implement and enforce strict safety protocols and emergency procedures to safeguard passengers, crew, and the vessel.
    • Conduct regular safety drills and ensure that all crew members are familiar with their roles in case of an emergency.
  4. Compliance and Regulations:
    • Ensure the river cruise boat complies with all relevant maritime regulations, environmental standards, and local laws.
    • Keep abreast of updates in maritime laws and regulations and implement necessary changes to maintain compliance.
  5. Communication and Coordination:
    • Maintain effective communication with onshore management, the Guest Services Manager, and other relevant personnel to coordinate daily activities and special events.
    • Collaborate with the Food and Beverage Manager to synchronize dining services with the cruise itinerary.
  6. Guest Services and Public Relations:
    • Represent the river cruise company in a professional and courteous manner, interacting with guests and addressing any inquiries or concerns.
    • Prioritize guest safety, comfort, and satisfaction throughout the journey.
  7. Vessel Maintenance:
    • Oversee the maintenance and cleanliness of the river cruise boat, ensuring it is in excellent working condition and aesthetically appealing for passengers.
    • Coordinate with the engineering department for regular maintenance and repairs.

 

Academic or trade qualifications

Working as the Captain of a commercial passenger river cruise boat demands a strong commitment to safety, excellent navigational skills, and the ability to lead and manage a diverse crew while providing exceptional guest services.

Marine Engineering Qualification:

  • Master inland or higher granted by AMSA
  • Hold a Marine Engine Driver Certificate 3 or Higher
  • Whilst not mandatory, a relevant engineering degree or diploma, with a focus on marine engineering, steam technology, or a related field would be desirable.
  • Marine Experience: Extensive experience in maritime operations, including piloting river vessels or working on commercial passenger ships.
  • Leadership Skills: Strong leadership and managerial abilities to lead and inspire the crew, promoting a culture of safety and excellence.
  • Navigation Expertise: Proficient knowledge of navigational equipment, charts, and electronic navigation systems specific to river cruising.
  • Safety Awareness: In-depth understanding of safety protocols, emergency procedures, and the ability to handle crisis situations calmly and effectively.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Familiarity with maritime regulations, licensing requirements, and environmental standards relevant to river cruises.
  • Communication Skills: Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for effective interaction with guests, crew members, and onshore personnel.
  • Adaptability: The capability to adapt to changing river conditions, weather, and unforeseen events during the cruise.
